2016 is Allergy UK’s 25th Anniversary year and to celebrate this, the Allergy UK Hero Awards ceremony was held. The awards aim to raise awareness of allergies and the people who live with and treat them.
The aim of the awards
We were invited to Allergy UK’s Hero Awards in London’s Grand Connaught Rooms on Thursday 8th September. It was lovely to meet Leigh, Dawn and Kerry in person as opposed to email messages when we work on projects together.
The awards aim to give recognition to the families, friends, members of the community, children and healthcare professionals. They have all made a difference to someone’s life within the allergic community. It was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate with those that we are all here to help.
Child Allergy Hero – Luke & Jamie Waggott, who walked away from the awards ceremony with the Child Allergy Hero Award. The boys are active in their community, raising vital funds and awareness for those living with allergic conditions. The boys share identical DNA but only Jamie has the allergies!
Family/Friend Allergy Hero – Sarah Chapman walked away with the Friend/Family Hero Award after being nominated by her son and husband. Sarah’s contribution to the allergy community, as well as her commitment to keeping her son safe from his life threatening condition, earned her the Friend/Family Hero title at this year’s hero awards.
Community Allergy Hero – Jo Griffith a primary school teacher who stayed calm in an emergency anaphylaxis situation and then went the extra mile to support her pupil and his mum afterwards.
Clinical Team Allergy Heroes – Dr Kumar and his Sunderland-based Clinical Team were nominated and won because of the patience, dedication and efficiency they bring to working with their patients.
All of the finalists were inspiring in their dedication to improving the day-to-day life of those with allergies, often going over and above their normal duties to achieve this.
